The Henry Rutgers Scholars Program was both a respected and rewarding undergraduate experience at Rutgers University. Students in their senior year were given the opportunity to pursue original, graduate level research on a topic of their choice usually within their major. Each Henry Rutgers Scholar worked with a faculty advisor on a two-semester, 12-credit independent research project, which culminated in a written thesis and an oral defense before a faculty committee.

The research that students pursue in the Program was key to their intellectual formation and pre-professional preparation, and was the stepping stone to some of the finest graduate, law, business and medical schools in the nation. The success of the Program existed in the sense of accomplishment and self-confidence the students gained in completing their projects. The measure of the success of the Program is the high number of Henry Rutgers Scholars who go on to graduate or professional study.

The Henry Rutgers Scholars Program saw its first 21 students graduate in 1951, and has grew to include over 3000 alumni. The motto of the Henry Rutgers Scholars Program, Vis in Scientia, translates to "Strength in Knowlege."
